Photography sessions at Watercolor are the best

Are you looking for one of the best 30a family photographers to photograph your family? I photograph a lot of families at Watercolor. It is such a gorgeous location without the huge condos in the background. So many places to eat or have ice cream. Check out my website to see more fun things to do in that area on 30a. It was a windy evening for Lauren and her family but as always on the beach, we made it work. This is why it is so important to hire a professional who is used to photographing families on the beach. The beach is usually windy and it is just part of it when you are on the Gulf. I’ve certainly learned to work around it.

What are some tips for your hair and the wind?

Windy conditions during a photoshoot can be both a blessing (for creating dynamic movement) and a curse (for turning hair into a tangled mess). Here are some tips to help manage your hair in the wind during photos, especially in a breezy location like Destin:

Before the Shoot:

Choose a Wind-Friendly Hairstyle:
Updos: Buns (high or low), chignons, and French twists are your best friends in the wind. Secure them tightly with pins and hairspray.
Braids: Braids (French, Dutch, fishtail) keep hair contained and look beautiful. A side braid can be especially flattering.
Ponytails: Sleek, low ponytails or even high ponytails can work. Secure tightly at the base and consider wrapping a strand of hair around the elastic for a polished look.
Half-Up Styles: Secure the top section of your hair back with clips or a tie, letting the rest flow. This keeps hair out of your face while still showing some length.
Use the Right Products:
Anti-Frizz Serum or Cream: Apply a smoothing product before styling to help tame flyaways and frizz caused by the wind.
Strong-Hold Hairspray: A good quality hairspray is essential to keep your style in place. Consider a flexible hold for some movement without stiffness.
Texturizing Spray (used strategically): For some styles like messy buns or braids, a texturizing spray can add grip and prevent them from falling flat in the wind.
Hair Gel or Pomade (for slicked-back looks): If you have shorter hair, a slicked-back style can look chic and keep hair out of your face.
Bring Supplies:
Bobby Pins: Lots and lots of bobby pins! They are crucial for securing stray hairs and keeping updos intact.
Hair Ties: Have extra hair ties on hand.
Clips: Larger clips can be useful for quickly pulling hair back between shots.
Headbands and Scarves: These can be stylish accessories that also help keep hair in place. Choose ones that complement your outfit.
Travel-Size Hairspray: For quick touch-ups.
Small Comb or Brush: To smooth out any rogue strands.

During the Shoot:

Embrace the Wind (Sometimes!): Work with the wind for some shots! Let your hair flow naturally away from your face for a dramatic effect. Your photographer can time the shots for the best movement.
Positioning is Key:
Turn Away from the Wind: Face slightly or fully away from the strongest direction of the wind to keep hair from blowing directly into your face.
Use Natural Wind Blocks: If possible, position yourself near a building, trees, or a dune that can help block some of the wind.
Communicate with Your Photographer: Let your photographer know if your hair is becoming a problem. They can adjust angles or suggest poses to minimize the wind’s impact.
Take Breaks for Hair Management: Don’t be afraid to take a few moments between shots to check your hair and make adjustments.
Focus on the Overall Look: While hair is important, try not to let it stress you out too much. Sometimes a little bit of windblown hair can add to the natural, beachy feel of the photos.
Consider Post-Processing: A good photographer can often fix minor hair flyaways in post-processing.
