I’ve been one of the best Destin photographers for over 18 years. This is the first time I’ve photographed this sweet family though. It was a gorgeous afternoon but windy for sure. I always tell clients to expect a windy afternoon when it comes to the beach. That is just how it works out there. To see things to do or more sessions in Destin, Click here.

Tips on how to prepare for a windy beach session?

As one of the many Destin photographers I can truly say after so many years I’m getting really good at photographing clients in crazy winds. It has just became the normal anymore. A windy beach photography session can present some challenges, but with the right preparation, you can still capture beautiful images. Here are some tips:

Before the Session:

Communicate with Your Photographer: If you’re the client, discuss the possibility of wind with your photographer beforehand. Ask if they have experience shooting in windy conditions and what their backup plans might be (e.g., alternative locations, rescheduling).
Check the Weather Forecast: Keep a close eye on the weather forecast leading up to your session. If high winds are predicted, be prepared to reschedule if possible.

Wardrobe Choices:
Avoid Flowy, Unstructured Clothing: Lightweight, flowy dresses or skirts can become unmanageable in strong winds. Opt for more structured fabrics or pants and tops.
Consider Fabrics: Some fabrics catch the wind more easily than others. Think about heavier knits, denim, or materials with more structure.
Layers Can Help: Layers can provide some weight and can be adjusted if the wind dies down.
Hair in Mind: Discuss hairstyles with your stylist (if applicable) or plan for styles that are less likely to be disrupted by the wind (e.g., braids, low buns, or secure ponytails). Bring hair ties, clips, and hairspray.
Secure Accessories: Avoid loose jewelry, scarves, or hats that could easily blow away.
During the Session:

Embrace the Wind (Strategically): Instead of fighting the wind, try to use it to your advantage. Flowing hair or clothing can add a sense of movement and drama to your photos. Your photographer can help guide you on how to pose with the wind.
Find Natural Windbreaks: Look for natural or man-made windbreaks like dunes, rocks, buildings, or even your photographer’s body to block some of the wind.
Change Angles: Experiment with different shooting angles. Sometimes shooting into the wind can create interesting effects, while shooting with your back to the wind can help keep hair and clothing in place.

More tips from one of Destin photographers:

Keep Props Minimal and Secure: If you’re using props, choose items that are less likely to blow away or be damaged by the wind. Secure them well.
Focus on Candid Moments: Windy conditions can make posed shots challenging. Embrace more candid, natural interactions that capture the energy of the environment.
Communicate Constantly: Photographer and subject(s) should communicate frequently. If hair or clothing is becoming a distraction, address it immediately.

Be Patient and Flexible: Windy beach sessions can be unpredictable. Be patient and willing to adapt to the conditions. Your photographer will likely have strategies to work around the wind.
Safety First: If the wind becomes too strong or poses a safety risk (e.g., blowing sand stinging eyes), it’s important to call it off or find a safer location.
By being prepared and working with the wind instead of against it, you can still capture beautiful and memorable photos during a windy beach session. As one of Destin photographers for many years if I ask to reschedule, it clearly is beyond windy outside.
